Added Authorizations

Candidates accepted into the Autism Spectrum Disorder or Emotional Disturbance certificate programs must currently hold a Preliminary Education Specialist teaching credential or be eligible for a Preliminary Education Specialist teaching credential prior to recommendation for the Added Authorization.

Candidates who earned their credentials out of state or out of country may need to add the CTEL for CLAD Authorization to their credential.  This program is designed to develop the capacity of teachers to effectively teach K-12 subject matter to English language learners in public, charter, and private schools.

Single / Multiple Subject Authorizations:

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing allows a general education teacher to obtain an additional credential, either multiple subject or single subject, without completing the full professional preparation program for that credential. Candidates must complete a three-semester unit or four-quarter-unit course in methodology directly related to teaching in a departmentalized setting in the specific content area sought and the content area subject-matter competence (CSET). The online single subject methods courses available are: Physical Education, English, Mathematics, Social Science, and Science.

To add the multiple subject credential, candidates must take Methods of Teaching in Elementary Schools, Principles and Methods of Teaching Elementary Reading, in addition to the RICA and CSET.
